Removable Media Module is a cost effective and secure way to encrypt data on removable media including Firewire, USB devices, and SD cards It is the first solution for the encryption of all data on portable devices to receive CAPS approval at Baseline (Impact Level 3).
Data stored on removable drives can be vulnerable if lost or stolen, or if the data is downloaded to an unmanaged computer. Removable Media Module is a simple and easy way to protect all data on removable and mass storage devices against loss and data leakage.
Protecting data in storage and in transit
Data is most at risk of being lost when taken outside of the physical boundaries of the organisation. Increasingly, mobile workers are required to work offsite and data needs to be stored, transported and shared using removable media. USB, Firewire and other portable devices offer low cost, easy to use storage, whereby data can easily be copied or downloaded with no regard to the security implications.
With data being so easily accessed and copied, organisations are increasingly finding that they need to put in place security measures to protect information. Furthermore, with new legislation requiring compliance with data protection measures, never has the issue of data security been more urgent or important.
Removable Media Module Overview
Removable Media Module is a, software based solution that encrypts data held on USB and Firewire removable media, with little or no interruption for the end user. It also controls who may access and how they may access the data, ensuring that only people working within a pre-defined team have access to the data. The Removable Media Module software must be installed and the correct encryption key deployed to read a device that has been encrypted by Removable Media Module. Data protected by Removable Media Module cannot be downloaded to an unmanaged computer, significantly reducing the risk of data leakage.
Once installed, Removable Media Module is transparent to the end user with encryption and decryption happening in the background, on the fly. Once encryption has taken place the devices may be read and treated as normal with all the usual features available including drag and drop, copy and paste etc
Removable Media Module is easy to deploy and manage. When combined with Becrypt Enterprise Manager, Removable Media Module can be deployed throughout an organisation with little or no disruption to business activities. The package can be deployed to thousands of users in the organisation quickly, bringing control to the use of removable devices for data storage within hours.
Workers within the same group, using the same encryption key, may share encrypted devices completely transparently if the Removable Media Module software is installed on their computer. Additionally, if policy allows, encrypted devices may be shared with users outside of the work group, by means of a password.
Removable Media Module can be used in conjunction with Becrypt Connect Protect to enforce a secure removable media policy. Connect Protect can be configured to prohibit the use of all unauthorised removable devices, and to provide a comprehensive audit trail of all file copy events taking place on the host PC, including audit copies of all the files written to and from each removable device.
CAPS Approval
In addition to the standard commercial version of Removable Media Module there is a CESG CAPS approved version suitable for use with protectively marked data up to Impact Level 3. This version uses key material from CESG.
