Perception about the value of certain types of organisational data is one of the primary drivers of data loss. A sizeable number of computer users do not view security of their organisation’s data in the same way that they view, for example, that of their laptop.
Electronic data is far less impressive than a physical asset; thousands of lines of data held on a USB flash drive commands far less respect than the latest laptop. Yet the impact to an organisation could be just as damaging if a USB flash drive is lost or stolen.

It emerged recently that two hospitals have suffered data losses, one in the UK and the other in US. The losses (here and here), illustrate the need not just for encryption, but for clear internal policy guidelines for handling data and the need for staff to be made aware of policy and trained in how to handle data. Patient records in particular can be highly sensitive and the impact of their loss considerable to those concerned, the need for protection is obvious.

With the majority of banks and other financial institutions maintaining a very tight grip on their lending purse strings, most corporates are having to justify each additional request for IT expenditure they make.
At the same time, corporate IT managers are under significant pressure – either from their boards or other senior management, including investor sources – to justify their current security expenditures in the face of continuing shareholder scrutiny on all expenses.

The news that the UK data watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), could be introducing fines of up to £500,000 for Companies that are reckless with personal data will no doubt raise data security higher up the corporate agenda and will be a wake up call for many.
